Una pareja del norte de California, en Estados Unidos, encontró enterradas en un terreno de su propiedad 1,427 monedas de oro que podrían tener un valor superior a los $10 millones.
Las monedas, que datan de entre 1847 y 1894, nunca estuvieron en circulación y se encuentran en buen estado, según informaron fuentes de la empresa numismática que representa a la pareja.
De confirmarse este hallazgo se trataría del mayor tesoro jamás desenterrado en EE.UU.
La pareja pidió permanecer en el anonimato, aunque fueron identificados como John y Mary.
Según la compañía que ha tasado las monedas, estas tienen un valor nominal de $27,000, aunque si subastaran su precio podría superar los $10 millones, ya que algunas de las piezas más raras podrían venderse por $1 millón cada una.
"Hemos visto naufragios en el pasado donde se encontraron miles de monedas de oro en muy alto grado, pero un tesoro escondido de este tipo no tiene precedentes", aseguró David McCarthy, de la firma de monedas Kagin, que está asesorando a la pareja.
Según destaca desde California el periodista de BBC Mundo Jaime González, hasta ahora el mayor tesoro desenterrado en EE.UU. fue encontrado por unos obreros de la construcción en 1985 en Tennessee. Tenía un valor real de $4,000, aunque acabó siendo vendido por más de $1 millón.
Un misterio
La pareja que halló el tesoro vive en una zona rural de California conocida como Gold Country por la cantidad de buscadores de oro que llegaron a la región durante la fiebre del oro del siglo XIX.
Encontraron las monedas en un área de su propiedad que conocida como Saddle Ridge y ese es el nombre que se le ha dado al tesoro.
"Vi sobresalir de la tierra una lata vieja en un camino por el que habíamos paseado casi cada día durante años", explicó John en un comunicado publicado por la empresa Kagin.
"Estaba mirando hacia abajo en el lugar adecuado y vi uno de los lados de la lata. Me agaché para apartar la tierra y me di cuenta de que estaba intacta", señaló por su parte Mary.
Esa fue la primera de las cinco latas con monedas que desenterraron.
La pareja tiene pensado quedarse con algunas de las monedas y vender el resto a través de una página de internet, entregando parte de los beneficios de la venta a obras de caridad.
Alguna de las piezas será exhibida este fin de semana en una reunión de la Ascociación de Numismática de EE.UU. que se celebra en Atlanta, Georgia.
