Unos 46.000 refugiados sirios han llegado al norte de Irak en los últimos diez días, con lo que suman ya más de 200.000, informaron agencias humanitarias de la ONU.
"Los refugiados sirios están llegando al punto fronterizo de Sahela y cruzando a la región de Kurdistán (norte de Irak), a un ritmo diario de 3.800 personas desde que comenzó el éxodo el pasado 15 de agosto", señaló la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR).
A los refugiados que han cruzado por Sahela hay que sumarles los 13.500 que cruzaron en un solo día por el puente de Peskhabour, sobre el río Tigris, otro de los pasos entre Siria e Irak, después de que éste fuese abierto el pasado día 17. Este punto fronterizo está ahora cerrado y el éxodo continúa por Sahela.
Los refugiados, que se cree que en su mayoría son kurdos, proceden de Alepo, Hassakahes, Qamishli y Efrin.
Unos de los motivos que apuntan las agencias de la ONU para este masivo desplazamiento es que la situación se ha agravado en esos lugares desde hace algunos meses, a medida que las luchas se han intensificado, hay escasez de comida y el precio de los productos básicos ha aumentado.
El Programa Alimentario Mundial y el ACNUR informaron de que un vuelo procedente de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos llegó este martes con ayuda humanitaria a Erbil, y que se espera que otro lo haga mañana procedente de Turquía, para atender a esos refugiados.
