Skype echó a andar a finales de agosto 2003 por dos emprendedores escandinavos, el sueco Niklas Zennstroem y el danés Janus Friis, que expandieron las tecnologías de redes P2P (redes entre iguales) existentes.
Skype, que permite a sus usuarios en internet realizar llamadas de alta calidad desde cualquier parte del mundo de forma gratuita, despegó rápidamente, acercando el mundo en una época en que la globalización y los viajes intercontinentales separaron a más familias que quizás en ningún otro momento en la historia.
"Me conmueve la forma en que la gente usa Skype, desde un soldado en servicio activo que ve a su bebé por primera vez hasta las instancias más simples, extraordinariamente comunes", dijo Elisa Steele, directora de marketing de Skype.
Entre esos ejemplos cotidianos, Steele destacó que "una madre y su hija puedan verse y hablar como si estuvieran sentadas juntas en la mesa de la cocina. Nuestro mayor logro radica en esos momentos".
Pero Skype no sólo ayuda a que personas que ya se conocen se mantengan en contacto, sino que también permite conocer gente nueva.
Un ejemplo fue a principios de este año, cuando estudiantes de entre 11 y 15 años de la Academia Woodham de Gran Bretaña y la Escuela Intermedia Merton de Wisconsin (norte de EEUU) organizaron un concurso de baile a uno y otro lado del Atlántico.
"Habían visto películas extranjeras, pero realmente hablar con estos niños en Estados Unidos fue absolutamente genial. Fue increíble", dijo Jon Tait, profesor de Woodham.
