El contacto con las manos del personal de los servicios de salud constituye uno de los principales vehículos de transmisión de infecciones en los centros hospitalarios, sostuvo la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
"Las infecciones asociadas a los centros de salud aparecen generalmente después de un contacto entre el sanitario y el paciente, por la transmisión de los gérmenes presentes en las manos", indicó el organismo al comentar los primeros resultados de la aplicación de su estrategia para una mejor higiene de las manos.
Las infecciones más habituales son las de las vías urinarias, infecciones en zonas que han sido intervenidas quirúrgicamente, las neumonías o las septicemias.
"De cada 100 pacientes hospitalizados, al menos siete en los países desarrollados y diez en los países en vías de desarrollo contraen una infección asociada a los centros sanitarios. En el caso de los cuidados intensivos, la tasa de infecciones alcanza al 30 por ciento de pacientes", según los datos de todo el mundo que ha podido recopilar la OMS.
La agencia para la salud de la ONU considera que es necesario formar al personal sobre la cuestión de la higiene de manos, entregarles una solución hidroalcohólica, controlar las buenas prácticas y poner recordatorios en lugares claves.
La estrategia de la OMS para la higiene de las manos ha sido aprobada por primera vez en 43 hospitales ubicados zonas geográficas y económicas muy distintas: Arabia Saudí, Costa Rica, Italia, Mali y Pakistán. Ello como parte de un estudio cuyos resultados han sido publicados en la revista "The Lancet Infectious Diseases".
En el periodo en que esta estrategia se aplicó en los centros médicos de esos países (entre diciembre de 2006 y diciembre de 2008), el respeto de las buenas prácticas de higiene de las manos pasó de un 51 a un 67 por ciento.
"La estrategia de la OMS ha tenido incluso un impacto mayor en los países de ingresos bajos y medios, que en aquellos de ingresos más elevados", comentó la responsable del programa "Una curación limpia es una cura segura" de la OMS, Benedetta Allegranzi.
"Las intervenciones más simples y más económicas son a veces las que tienen un mayor impacto. Ahora tenemos métodos para poner fin a enfermedades y muertes evitables", dijo por su parte Liam Donaldson, responsable del área de Seguridad de los Pacientes en la OMS.
Hasta el momento, la estrategia de la OMS ha sido aplicada en un total de 15.700 estructuras sanitarias en 168 países y los resultados del estudio corroboran su validez como referencia universal.
