Copenhague honró este viernes a la Sirenita, el símbolo más reconocido de la capital danesa, con una fiesta popular para celebrar los cien años de existencia de la estatua inspirada en el cuento de Hans Christian Andersen.
Hace hoy justo un siglo fue colocada en el puerto de Langelinie la pequeña estatua donada a la ciudad por el magnate cervecero Carl Jacobsen, que cada año visitan un millón de personas y es de lejos el monumento más fotografiado de Dinamarca.
Enamorado del personaje tras ver un ballet en el Teatro Real sobre el triste relato de Andersen, que poco tiene que ver con la versión edulcorada de Dysney, Jacobsen le encargó una estatua al escultor Edvard Eriksen.
La negativa de la bailarina Ellen Price, que entonces hacía el papel principal en el ballet, a posar desnuda obligó a Eriksen a usar a su mujer como modelo: el primer contratiempo para la Sirenita, que desde que comenzó a publicitarse como atracción turística décadas después, ha tenido una vida muy agitada.
Fue volada una vez con explosivos de su pedestal de granito, decapitada tres veces, otra le arrancaron un brazo, ha aparecido pintada de varios colores, y se le han colocado todo tipo de objetos, desde camisetas de fútbol a velos y una túnica del Ku Klux Klan.
De ser diana principal de la ira feminista en décadas anteriores ha pasado a ser usada para todo tipo de reivindicaciones políticas, desde las de movimientos okupas a las de grupos xenófobos, generando una repercusión que en muchos casos ha traspasado las fronteras nacionales.
Hasta le pusieron hace unos años a una sirena expresionista a pocos metros de distancia para hacerle la competencia a este icono, que en 2010 fue trasladado seis meses a China para decorar el pabellón danés en la Expo de Shanghai.
"Eres nuestra Torre Eifell, nuestra estatua de la Libertad", dijo cerca de la célebre escultura la concejala de Cultura de Copenhague, Pia Allerslev, durante la fiesta popular organizada junto a la obra de Eriksen.
Cientos de personas se congregaron allí para homenajear con música y discursos varios a la Sirenita, que no paró de ser fotografiada todo el tiempo por grupos de curiosos apiñados en el puerto de Langelinie.
Con sus 125 centímetros de altura y 175 kilos de peso, la Sirenita suele causar cierta decepción en quienes la ven por primera vez, como admitió Allerslev, apelando no obstante al carácter popular de un monumento con el que los daneses mantienen una relación ambivalente.
La actitud de buena parte de sus compatriotas hacia ella está más cercana a la indiferencia que a la admiración, a pesar de reconocerle su valor simbólico.
Su aspecto modesto y su tamaño reducido casan muy bien con la imagen de Dinamarca como un país pequeño y acogedor, un país de cuento, como los que escribió Andersen, su autor más internacional: de ahí que en su momento fuese usada como símbolo turístico.
Las celebraciones vinculadas al centenario, que incluyen también exposiciones y otras actividades, continuarán esta noche en el mismo escenario con una representación del musical ruso que lleva el nombre de la estatua y una actuación de la bailarina danesa-española Selene Muñoz.
Un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales cerrará el día de homenaje a la Sirenita, que de espaldas al mar y con la mirada melancólica continuará recibiendo a turistas y curiosos junto al puerto de Langelinie.
