Microsoft lanzó este miércoles la primera actualización de Windows 8, una revisión de su modernizado sistema operativo que llega apenas ocho meses después de su estreno para dar un impulso a una plataforma en la que se juega gran parte del futuro del gigante informático.
La presentación tuvo lugar en el marco de la jornada inaugural de su conferencia anual para desarrolladores de software Build, en San Francisco (California, EE.UU.), donde se confirmó la disponibilidad inmediata de Windows 8.1 mediante descarga a través de preview.windows.com.
Tal y como estaba previsto, el icónico botón de inicio reaparece tras las peticiones de los usuarios y permitirá apagar el sistema en el que el escritorio tradicional recupera importancia frente a la puesta en escena más actual, en "tiles" o iconos, que sigue abanderando el producto.
Windows 8.1 facilita una mayor personalización visual de la pantalla de inicio, acceso a la lista de todas las aplicaciones disponibles de un solo vistazo y utilizar hasta cuatro de ellas simultáneamente.
Windows 8 debutó el pasado 26 de octubre como la gran apuesta de Microsoft para competir en el nuevo entorno de aplicaciones, pantallas táctiles y dispositivos móviles, si bien las ventas no han respondido a las expectativas en un contexto decadente del mercado del PC.
Una realidad latente en la presentación de hoy del consejero delegado de Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, que aseguró que el futuro de "Windows es muy, muy brillante" y dejó claro que su compañía está "atravesando una transformación" en la que resulta fundamental la velocidad de renovación de su sistema operativo.
Microsoft tiene el pie puesto en el acelerador pero en este viaje necesita de la implicación de quienes crean los contenidos que finalmente demandará el consumidor final, los desarrolladores de software.
Ballmer espera que este mes haya ya más de 100.000 aplicaciones para Windows 8 una cifra significativa conseguida en menos de un año de vida pero aún muy inferior a la oferta de 900.000 aplicaciones existentes en la App Store de Apple y las más de 800.000 para Android de Google.
Entre las aplicaciones que no estaban y llegarán a Windows 8 está Facebook y Flipboard.
Para hacer más atractiva la creación de software para Windows 8 y su consumo, el gigante informático rehizo su tienda de aplicaciones donde ahora será más fácil encontrar novedades, incorpora un servicio de sugerencias de contenidos para el usuario final y habilita tarjetas regalo para recargar la cuenta Microsoft con moneda local.
Con Windows 8.1, los desarrolladores podrán tener más control sobre cómo se muestra su software al usuario y acceder al sistema del buscador Bing y sus mapas para crear aplicaciones, para lo que se puso como ejemplo un recorrido turístico virtual por la ciudad de Valencia (España).
Microsoft hizo un repaso a la gama de dispositivos disponibles con Windows 8, desde los nuevos teléfonos Nokia Lumia 928, 925 y 521, hasta los portátiles híbridos como el Lenovo ThinkPad Helix o la línea de tabletas mini que Ballmer vaticina que proliferarán en "en los próximos meses"
"Los dispositivos Windows de hoy no se parecen a los que había hace 5 años. Hemos visto una explosión de nuevos aparatos diseñados para Windows 8", indicó.
Como ejemplo de tableta pequeña se mostró la Acer Iconia W3, de pantalla de 8 pulgadas y con procesador Intel® AtomTM Z2760, que se regaló a los asistentes, que también recibieron una Microsoft Surface Pro.
La conferencia Build concluirá el próximo viernes 28 de junio.
